Malé, Maldives – The Opposition Coalition today released a statement stating that they are preparing to file a Supreme Court case against the MDP Parliamentary Group leader and MP for Medhu Henveyru constituency Ali Azim.

Opposition released a statement calling for the MDP leadership to stop threatening independent commissions and Maldivian citizens.

At the first sitting of the parliament for this year, MP Ali Azim expressed concern about the acquittal of former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom by the Supreme Court of Maldives.

MP Azim questioned the Supreme Court decision stating that he is shocked at the Supreme Court ruling, since the judges bench agreed that government money was deposited to the ex President Yameen’s account.

The [Supreme Court] judges made the ruling [to acquit former President Yameen] based on superficial reasons. Judges must think deeper when making such decisions. If the judges don’t, we are ready to fire whoever necessary.

The MDP PG group leader explained that they are ready to dismiss independent commissions such as the now defunct Anti-Corruption Commission, Civil Service Commission and even the Judicial Services Commission. He added that the party will do whatever is necessary to put people who stole government resources behind bars.

Referring to this, the Opposition condemned the threat to dismiss judges and take action against those who do not rule as per MDP’s wishes and file a case against MP Ali Azim at the Supreme Court.
