President instructs to retrieve Maldivians in Ukraine

Malé, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to retrieve Maldivians in Ukraine amid threats of war.

Spokesperson of the President’s Office Mabrook Azeez stated today that Foreign Ministry has begun procedures to retrieve the Maldivians in Ukraine.

Foreign Ministry states that Maldivians in Ukraine will be provided with financial assistance to return to the Maldives via commercial flights since borders are open.

Ministry of Higher Education has also started the process by providing financial assistance to Maldivian students seeking to return. 49 of the 50 Maldivians in the states of Kiev and Kharkiv are students.

A group of 34 students in Kharkiv, Ukraine, have previously urged the Maldivian government to evacuate them as the city is the nearest to the Russian border.
