Government of Maldives condemns hostile attack targeting King Abdullah Airport, Saudi Arabia

Malé, Maldives – The Government of Maldives released a statement today strongly condemning the drone attack aimed towards King Abdullah Airport in Jazan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The statement read that the recent escalation of such attacks targeting civilian areas and economic infrastructure exhibits the elevated threat to the security and stability of the region and undermines the efforts by the concerned parties and the international community to find peaceful solutions to the conflict.

The Government of Maldives reaffirms its solidarity with the Government and the fraternal people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and reiterates its commitment to stand against terrorism in all forms and manifestations.

On 21 February 2022, Saudi Arabia’s air defences intercepted a drone targeting King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Airport in the city of Jizan. The attack injured 16 people of different nationalities with three in critical condition.

A similar attack was launched towards Abu Dhabi International Airport, on 17 January 2021, resulting in loss of lives and injuries to several civilians.
