Russia emerges as top tourism source market to the Maldives in 2022

Malé, Maldives – Statistics publicized by the Ministry of Tourism On Wednesday revealed that with 44,055 arrivals, Russia is the top source market for tourists in 2022.

This makes up 15 percent of tourist arrivals into the island destination this year.

Russia is followed by the UK with 31,921 tourists while India has dropped to the third rank with 26,094. Germany closely follows India with 21,807 and Italy ranks fifth with 19,696 tourist arrivals.

France, US, Ukraine, Switzerland and Australia make up the rest of the top 10 source markets with a market share of 5 percent and less.

The report reveals that as of 2 March 2022, 289,964 tourists have travelled to the Maldives. This is a 48.6 percent increase compared to the same duration last year. With the daily arrivals at 4,754, tourists, the average duration of stay per tourist is 8.8 days.

Even as Russia and Ukraine fall into war, Maldives has welcomed travellers from both countries. The island nation has provided visa easements and other flexibilities to the Ukrainian tourists unable to return home while at the same time allowing Russian oligarchs to harbour their yachts in the country.
