Special Envoy to monitor May 6 attack Abbas Faiz meets with Speaker Nasheed

Malé, Maldives – The Special Envoy to the Government of Maldives to monitor the investigation, prosecution and trial of the May 6 terror attack Abbas Faiz met with the victim of the attack Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday.

Mr Faiz met with the Speaker at the Parliament house of the Maldives, the People’s Majlis, earlier today. The Majlis has not released details of their meeting.

Mr Abbas Faiz was appointed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as Special Envoy to oversee the May 6 investigation with a directive released on 19 May 2021.

The Special Envoy is mandated to ensure that all stages of the investigation, prosecution and trial of the alleged perpetrators, and any related and necessary inquiries, comply with international best practice and national laws to ensure public confidence in the integrity of these processes. Mr Faiz oversight of the ongoing investigation will be conducted within the parameters set by the Prosecutor General.

Mr Faiz has more than 30 years of experience monitoring the human rights situation in South Asia, including the Maldives.
