Mayor Nizar calls for more transparency in Addu child sex abuse case amid protests

Addu City, Maldives – Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar on Tuesday requested the Maldives Police Service and Gender Ministry for more transparency in the Addu child sex abuse case.

The Mayor has said this while public are protesting to investigate another suspect alleging that the 59 year old woman in police custody was framed for the crime.

Addu Mayor also stated that it is a good idea to include public allegations in the investigation.

A 59 year old Maldivian woman was arrested in the southern region for the sexual abuse of a minor on 25 March 2022. Police confirmed on Monday that the woman has been remanded to custody till end of trial.

The case was reported to the police on 24 March 2022. Reports suggest that the suspect who was employed at a southern school assaulted a 6 year old female student. Local media report that the woman had worked at a local school for 30 years as janitorial staff.
