Police explore the possibility of another suspect in Addu child sexual abuse case

Malé, Maldives – The Maldives Police Service stated on Tuesday that they are exploring all avenues including the possibility of involvement of another individual in the Addu child sexual abuse case.

In their statement, Police stated that they are taking statements from different parties and are exploring whether another suspect is involved in the crime.

Police confirmed that a case of sexual abuse of a 6 year old was submitted on 23 March 2022, following which they arrested a 59 year old woman on 24 March 2022 under court warrant. The suspect has since been remanded to custody till end of trial.

Police further detailed that the child victim has received medical and phycological assessments.

We, in coordination with relevant authorities, are taking actions to ensure safety and protection for the child.

MPS released this statement amid protests calling for the arrest of a close family member of the victim. Protestors allege that the suspect arrested has been framed for a crime she did not commit.

Addu Mayor Ali Nizar has also urged the police to take public suspicions into consideration in the investigation.
