Malé, Maldives – Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) on Saturday released the quota and announced unlimited tuna purchase effective 30 April 2022.

MIFCO placed limits on tuna purchase on 6 April 2022 citing an abnormal high catch in the southern atolls.

The quota and queue system lead fishermen from the five southern atolls to protest at the Koodoo Fisheries Complex.

The current freezing capacity in the south includes,

  • Maandhoo Factory (120 tonnes)
  • Koodoo Factory (240 tonnes)
  • Jazeera 102 Vessel (120 tonnes)
  • Mahaakalaminja Vessel (75 tonnes)
  • Hulhumeedhoo Factory (60 tonnes)

MIFCO has recently announced the establishment of additional facilities in the south including fisheries complexes in M. Mulah and GDh. Thinadhoo. The company also announced extending the Koodoo cold storage to 4,000 matric tons.
