Police search for suspected paedophile missing after Criminal Court release

Malé, Maldives – Maldives Police Service on Wednesday began a search for a suspect arrested for child sex abuse.

Police are attempting to find Mohamed Bishar Ismail (41), G. Thaburuge, after he was released with conditions by the Criminal Court in 2021.

  • 10 January 2020 – The suspect, arrested in the South Polic Region for suspicion of child sexual abuse, was remanded by a magistrate court till the end of trial.
  • 26 May 2021 – Case transferred to the Criminal Court and the upper court upholds lower court remand order.
  • Suspect is later released by the Criminal Court with conditions after an appeal from defence.
  • 23 December 2021 – Prosecutor General’s Office appeals release order at High Court. High Court rules to uphold the initial Criminal Court order to remand till trial.

Police stated that the authorities are unable to find the suspect since the High Court order in December 2021 and asked for public assistance in locating the suspect.

Police urge all parties with any information on the suspect to call 9991442.

UPDATE

Police report that the suspect was arrested in GA. Kolamaafushi at 15:33 today. Police are in the process of transferring the suspect to Maldives Correctional Services.
