13yr old’s Murder: Criminal court extends remand by 15 days for juvenile suspect

Malé, Maldives – Criminal Court has extended the remand date for the 17 year old who is charged with murdering 13 year old for additional 15 days.

While two arrests were made in connection to the murder and kidnapping of the child, Police earlier informed that they are a minor aged 17 and an adult aged 27. While the juvenile has been remanded for another 15 days, the adult suspect has been remanded until the end of the trial.

The suspects are charged with 4 criminal offences including sexual abuse of the minor. Other charges include murder and rape.

The body of the 13 year old boy was found at 02:38 on June 22, 2021, following a 48-hour search. The body was found inside a box that had been thrown in the sea of Hulhumalé Phase 2.

The body was sent for postmortem on July 5th. A media official from Maldives Police Service previously informed that the postmortem will be done at the medical college in Trivandrum. The murder victim was first reported to be sent to India during the week of June 27.

The body was brought back and buried on July 12th and the report was received later on Saturday night. Police media official informed that the preliminary report has been received. However, no details of the report were revealed. The case is being investigated by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender, keeping the details classified.
