Malé, Maldives – Maldives Media Council (MMC) has elected Mohamed Shafau as its new President.
Shafau was elected with 9 out of 15 votes, of the total sitting members of the council.
The election was prompted following the council’s former President Shahubaan Fahumy’s resignation. In his resignation Shahubaan cited he feels unsafe and faces harassment outdoors when out with his family, surrounding recent money laundering allegations made against him.
Prior to his resignation, a couple of failed attempts were also made to remove Shahubaan as President of MMC. However, each time Shahubaan scraped through to the safe side.
