Malé, Maldives – Leader of Jumhooree Party and MP for Maamigili constituency, Qasim Ibrahim has put forward an amendment to the penal code to make gay sex a serious criminal offense.

MP Qasim proposed the amendment pushing to make gay sex of both genders to be a serious criminal offense in the criminal code stating that people who carry out such acts must be isolated as they are a danger to the society.

He further added that if no serious action is taken against such people that the fear of such acts will become a norm in the Maldivian society is unquestionable. MP Qasim also said that gays are a threat to the fabric of Maldivian society and islamic culture of the island nation.

Qasim’s motion to amend the penal code comes following the recently leaked same-sex videos as well as the blackmail of these individuals seen in the videos involving a Bangladeshi man and several others including high profile Maldivians.
