Nazim Sattar pleads guilty to sexual misconduct

Malé, Maldives – Younger brother of Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and prominent lawyer, Nazim Sattar has pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct.

Nazim was charged under the Penal Code for his involvement in same-sex relations with Bangladeshi man MD Alamgir.

Nazim who also represents Speaker Nasheed for the May 6 blast was seen in a video leaked on social media which showed the two men engaged in sexual acts.

Following the leak of this video, Nazim had initially denied his involvement with another man.

Nazim’s plea comes while Bangladeshi national MD Alamgir pleaded guilty to the charges raised against him at the the preliminary hearing and was sentenced to seven months and seven days in prison by the Criminal Court on August 31, 2022.

Alamgir, who has been seen in leaked videos depicting explicit content of sexual nature with multiple men, was arrested on 12 June.

In addition to Nazim and Alamgir, former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) and Abdul Rahman Rafeeu, a police officer working in the Drug Enforcement Department (DED) have also been charged for the same offense after their videos with MD Alamgir were leaked on social media.

According to Commissioner of Police Mohammed Hameed, the authority had identified that 38 had homosexual relationships with Alamgiri on camera. Their cases will be sent for prosecution as their investigations are concluded, he said. Passports of 18 people identified from analyzed videos have already been seized.
