Census 2022: Population of Maldivians increase by only 16,800

Malé, Maldives – The data collected for census 2022 so far has revealed that within the past years, the population of Maldivians in the country only increased by 16,897.

Based on the census data published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) which was collected after eight years, the living population of Maldivians in the country is at 355,331. Back in 2014, this figure was at 338,434.

The census data also revealed that the living population of foreigners in the country has increased by 33,000 in the past eight years, from 63,673 to more than 97,000. As this figure is only 65 percent of the records at Maldives Immigration, the statistical bureau is working on further improving the accuracy of this data, revealed NBS.

NBS also revealed that the data collected so far only accounts for 89 percent of the Maldivians living in the country and abroad, and that information collection of is still ongoing to fill this gap.
