Man in police custody dies, autopsy to be done

Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Maldives – A man brought into Police custody earlier today has passed away.

Following the 43 year old local’s death, Police said that a man arrested by the authority today was transported to the health center of Madaveli Island, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll after the individual suffered chest pain and presented seizure like symptoms. Unfortunately, the man had already passed by the time he was transported to the health center, said Police.

While there is some public uproar in Madaveli over the incident – with accusations being thrown at Police – Police also detailed that the man was being transported in a rented private speed boat and that there were members of the public aboard the boat at the time of the incident.

It has since been announced that an autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.

Police further added that information pertaining to the incident has been shared with the National Integrity Commission and that Police has requested the Human Rights Commission of Maldives to investigate the matter as well.

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdullah also expressed his views following the incident, assuring the public that action will be taken if negligence is found on the Police’s part.
