Malé, Maldives – Maldives Media Council (MMC) has suspended the council’s member Mohamed Shafiu over allegations of sexually harassing a local journalist.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting held by MMC last night, and the council further detailed that the sexual harassment which allegedly took place during and after a familiarisation trip of journalists from Maldives to India will be investigated, and that until the conclusion of this investigation, Shafiu will remain in suspension.
In the meeting, it was also decided on an investigative committee which was given a duration of seven days to carryout and conclude the investigation.
The Vaguthu News journalist came forward regarding the harassment two days ago, and since then, the matter has been escalated to Maldives Police Service as well.
