Malé, Maldives – Maldives Police Service has filed the case against Maldives Media Council member Mohammed Shafiu, allegedly sexually harassing a female journalist for lack of sufficient evidence.

Shafiu was also suspended by the Maldives Media Council (MMC) for allegedly sexually harassing a female journalist of Vaguthu newspaper.

The MMC today said that the decision to exclude Shafiu from the responsibilities of the council was terminated because there was insufficient evidence in the case investigated by the police and since police decided to file the case.

“The Council strongly condemns the press release issued by Vaguthu Online stating that Mohamed Shafiu sexually harassing an employee of Vaguthu Newspaper and the related news published on Vaguthu Online which creates an untrue and negative impression of the Maldives Media Council and its members.” The MMC said in a statement today.

In addition, the MMC said that only based on the articles from Vaguthu and without any regard to the facts that some associations in Maldives had released statements and that it was not the way associations should work in free democratic societies.

MMC also reminded and urged to observe the laws, rules and regulations in the presentation of news and information and to present information and news in accordance with the rules and ethical standards of the Maldivian media.
