Abdullah’s funeral held, postmortem results yet to be announced

Malé, Maldives – The body of Abdullah Rasheed, who died while in police custody has been buried after being brought from India following a post-mortem.

Abdullah’s body was brought to Maldives and buried at the Asahara after Maghrib prayers this Saturday. Abdullah s funeral was attended by a large number of people. Before Abdullah’s body was sent for post-mortem, his face was shown to his family.

According to the family and witnesses, Abdulla Rasheed died following delayed treatment for chest pain after police arrested him during their anti-drug operation. Abdullah asked the police for treatment but the police did not treat him saying it was an act of teasing.

Abdullah died shortly after his arrest on 25th last month. The family filed a case in the Civil Court to recover Abdullah’s body but to no avail. The civil court ruled that there was no need to stop the post-mortem and allowed it.

The body of the deceased was taken to India for post-mortem against the family’s will.
