DED officer arrested in drug-fueled party raid suspended

Malé, Maldives – Maldives Police Service has revealed that the Drug Enforcement Department officer who was arrested while partying under the influence of drugs has now been suspended.

Police arrested 12 people in a drug operation conducted in Malé and Hulhumalé last Thursday night. They were four women and eight men. All of them were arrested while partying in an apartment in Malé city.

Following local media reports stating that the arrested persons include a police officer from the Drug Enforcement Department, Maldives Police stated that even though he is a member of the Drug Enforcement Department (DED) but he will not have the opportunity to abuse drugs in police custody.

A police officer has been suspended from his job following his arrest in an operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Department.

Police also stated that although the police officer was part of a DED drug surveillance team, the police also assured that there would be no opportunity for him or any other police officer to misuse the drugs due to the storage procedure of the DED.

Both the criminal and administrative cases against him are being investigated, police said. He will also be punished without any exception.

Police are charging some of the arrested with drug possession and trafficking. The Criminal Court remanded them in custody for various periods.

The court orders show that drugs were found in the apartment, but it is not known whether enough drugs were found to meet trafficking standards.
