Malé, Maldives – Commissioner of Police Mohammed Hameed has said that police will start to use taser guns later this year.

CP Hameed said the regulations have been made for the use of tasers and has been gazetted in order to start using them. The taser guns will used in dangerous operations conducted by the police.

“This is a move for the safety of both the police and the public. Using a teaser gun is safer than going with a baton. Even using pepper spray,” the CP said.

The taser guns brought by Maldives Police is manufactured in the United States and is now used in many developed countries. The TASER 7 is the latest version of the model. Within about five seconds of the taser gun, a man can be stopped moving and police would be able to arrest him.

Police are preparing to start using taser guns with 25 guns. Twenty policemen were given training in the use of guns in two batches.
