Malé, Maldives – Former President and Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed has filed a case with Civil Court of Maldives against Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef over a defamatory tweet.

In a statement, President Nasheed’s legal team said the suit was filed in the Civil Court today seeking compensation for the damage caused by Shareef’s defamatory tweets against Nasheed.

Speaker Nasheed’s lawyer has asked Shareef to pay MVR 10 million as compensation for the damage he has suffered “due to the lies he [Shareef] wrote in the tweet”.

Shareef tweeted that Nasheed had planned to kill fifty people to overthrow President Maumoon’s government and blame their deaths on President Maumoon’s hair. The then MDP parliamentary group passed a resolution to stop the atrocity according to Shareef.

Shareef added that Nasheed tried to kill 50 people by bringing in mercenaries. The plan was to bring the mercenaries as journalists and kill 50 people during a massive MDP demonstration, Shareef alleged.

“Mohammed Nasheed denies all these allegations.” the statement said.
