Malé, Maldives – Maldives Police Service has revealed that Abubakur Faisal, who was arrested in connection with his wife, Nishama Mohamed’s murder, was found trying to commit suicide at 23:15 pm last night.
Faisal was taken to the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital and is being treated in the ICU of the hospital, the police official said.
Faisal attempted suicide while in police custody. He has been in police custody since last Saturday. Police said Faisal was remanded in custody for 15 days after being produced before the court.
Nishama was found dead in her room on the 10th of this month. Faisal, who is accused of killing Nishama, works as a technician at the Nolhivaram FENAKA branch. After Nishama’s death, he fled to Kulhudhuffushi according to Nishama’s family.
After the news of Nishama’s death surfaced, he went to the Kulhudhuffushi police station and handed himself over to the police.
Nishama’s family found out that she was dead when family members went to their house after neither of them answered when the family called Nishama and Faisal to delete the photos taken without her headscarf.
There were also rumors of Nishama being abused by her husband, and Faisal has a record of drug use and trafficking. His ex-wife divorced him because of drug abuse, according to official complaints.
Nishama and Faisal have been married for years and have three children. The eldest is seven years old and the second is four years old. The youngest is in baby nursery and is two years old.
Nishama’s body has now been brought to Malé and is in the morgue. While police have decided to conduct a post-mortem on Nishama’s body, police did not disclose any further details about the death.
