Malé, Maldives – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has handed over its presidential ticket to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
President Solih was presented with the presidential ticket at a rally held at Kaaniva area last night. The ticket was handed over to President Solih by MDP chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.
The President secured his ticket for a second term in office by a huge margin in the MDP primary held on 28th last month. According to the final results, Nasheed received 15,641 votes. That’s 38.90 percent of the vote. President Solih received 24,566 votes. That’s 61.10 percent of the vote.
The President was handed the presidential ticket tonight, and a pro-Nasheed party member had filed a civil suit seeking the annulment of the primary.
Nasheed is now trying to run a separate political movement within the MDP under the name of “Revival of Thought” which his supporters are signing up for it.
This year’s presidential election is scheduled for September 9.
