Malé, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed Ibrahim Waheed as a Minister at the President’s Office on Wednesday.

Waheed was presented his letter of appointment at a ceremony held at the President’s Office this afternoon.

Mr Waheed had earlier served as the Chairman of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) from April 2009 to February 2012 and as the Financial Executive and State Minister for the Ministry of Health and Family from February 2011 to February 2012.

He also served as the Company Secretary for the Maldives Stock Exchange (MSE) from September 2007 to March 2018, and Deputy Managing Director and member of the Board of Directors of FENAKA Corporation Ltd.

Waheed’s appointment as Minister at the President’s Office came moments after Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Vice-President Mohammed Shifaz (Shippe) was sacked as the Minister of the President’s Office.

The President’s Office did not disclose the reason for the dismissal, but it is rumored that Shifaz, who supports Speaker Nasheed’s faction in MDP, had stopped going to office since the start of the party’s presidential primary campaign on 28th last month.

Shifaz is one of the most prominent figures in Nasheed’s faction. Shifaz has also been criticized by President Solih’s supporters for trying to find another candidate without supporting President Solih.

Recently, Hussain Amru, who was the MD of STO, was also sacked. Amru is also a supporter of President Nasheed and has been working with him.

Nasheed, who lost the primary against President Solih last January to nominate a candidate for this year’s presidential election, is currently working to form a separate faction within the MDP.
