The Maldives Media Council (MMC) has urged the media to refrain from reporting suicides and attempted suicides in their platforms.

The council said this after some media reported yesterday that a child had committed suicide.

MMC said media reporting of child suicides is a very sensitive issue and several studies have shown that reporting such incidents increases such cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also urges the media to be cautious when reporting such cases.

The MNC has urged all media outlets and journalists to give priority to responsible journalism as the Code of Ethics of Maldivian Journalists does not promote such activities.

Police also said yesterday that they would not disclose information on suicides or attempted suicides.
