Male’ City Council has passed a motion to collect a fee from foreigners before allowing public parks in Male’.
In a council meeting held yesterday, council decided to take a fee from foreigners for using Sultan park and Lonuziyaaraiyh park. Council also decided to segregate the foreigners into foreign workers in Maldives and tourists visiting Maldives.
The decision was to implement a fee structure for foreigners on 15th of June 2023. They are working on to assign the amount of money to be taken from foreigners before using the parks.
Voices have outlined this change allows for discrimination and increase of xenophobia among the public as expatriate workers claim they are already taunted by severe discrimination from the public and employers allow them to live in inhumane conditions in Maldives.
