COVID-19: Ilhan Omar’s father passes away

America – Ilhan Omar’s father Nur Omar Mohamed has passed away due to complications from Covid-19, revealed the US rep on Monday.

In a tweet Omar wrote “Surely we belong to God and to him shall we return. It is with tremendous sadness and pain to say goodbye to my father, Nur Omar Mohamed. No words can describe what he meant to me and all who knew and loved him.”

Following the passing of her mother while Omar was just an infant, she was raised by her father and grandfather, The Guardian and The New York Times have reported. She and her father, who are originally from Somalia traveled to America as refugees in 1995 during the civil war and settled in Minneapolis.

NBS reports that Omar has asked for privacy during this time and did not reveal any further details surrounding the death of her father.

US is one of the worst hit countries during the global Covid-19 pandemic, which has so far claimed more than 116,500 lives according to an NBC News count.

At least two other members of Congress have lost relatives to the illness including Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.
