None of the government leaders wishes well for the people: Former President Yameen

Malé, Maldives — The jailed former president of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom states that none of the members of the ruling coalition wish well for the country’s citizens.

While being served in a five year sentence in prison for money laundering conviction, Yameen sent his lawyers to pass the message to the Maldivian people.

While sharing this message with AVAS, lead counsel of Yameen’s legal team, former Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed stated that the foreign countries have entangled in Maldivian internal politics to a extend that it has never before.

Yameen had raised concern in his message and urged the people to continue to serve the nation, stated Jameel.

The former president had furthermore noted that the Maldives is currently facing challenges from several sides, and that yet none of the government leaders seem to be concerned about these issues.

“His message [to the people] is that no leader of the current government is concerned with the people’s affairs. He wishes for the people to continue to strive and remain steadfast in serving the nation. [He wishes] for the people to prevent from happening, anything that may jeopardise the country’s independence and nationality”, Jameel conveyed the message on behalf of the former president Yameen.

Two new charges have also been raised against Yameen for bribery and money laundering. He was charged with corruption offences relating to the leasing of R. Fushidhiggaru island to be developed as a resort island.

Dr. Jameel had also highlighted the updates regarding the ongoing cases of the former president while speaking to AVAS. According to Jameel, authorities continue to hinder the legal team in meeting with Yameen and also noted that whil Yameen got accused of two additional charges, he has not been given adequate time to prepare for trial.

Jameel furthermore added that bogus charges have also been raised against Yameen while mentioning that it is clearly politically motivated.
