Malé, Maldives – Former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been given the first dose of Pfizer vaccine.

According to Maldives Correctional Services, President Yameen was brough to Malé last night to be vaccinated and was taken back to Maafushi Jail immediately afterwards.

While this is the second time he had been brought for vaccination, Corrections had said that the Former President had refused to get vaccine when he was brought on April 14, 2021, which his legal team has refuted against.

A media official of the Maldives Correctional Service spoke to local media outlet ‘AdduLive’ and informed that Yameen was brought to Male’ city around 21:40 on April 14, 2021 to administer the Covid-19 vaccine.

The official said that the reason for refusing the Covid-19 vaccine will be known by Former President Yameen and that Correctional services have received no further information regarding the matter.

The Former President’s lawyer Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said that Yameen was brought to Malé against protocol since the defence was not informed. He said that the reason Yameen was brought to Malé was questionable. Dr. Jameel also said that Yameen has never been against receiving the vaccine at any time.

Apart from this, the Correctional Service has stated that while Yameen was brought to Male’ city last night, discussions were held on transfer Yameen to house arrest. During the press conference that was held on last Monday, President of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had also mentioned the government is having discussions on transfer Yameen to house arrest.

President Solih stated that he received a letter from the wife of Yameen requesting to change Yameen to house arrest while mentioning his health condition. President Solih stated at the press conference that he will not allow any wrongs to befall on former President Yameen.
