Male’, Maldives — Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was jailed in an attempt to hide the incumbent government’s shortcomings, stated his former Vice President and head of his legal defense team Dr. Mohamed Jameel in a tweet earlier today.

Jameel stated that Yameen was jaield to hide the current government and MDP’s lack of ability, and that Yameen has spent 400 days in jail, suffering inhumane torment by the government.

“Personal grudges have gotten out of hand, the suffering being inflicted must stop. Successfully ruling for 5 years should not be a crime” said Jameel

In the same tweet, Dr. Jameel called Yameen’s 5 year presidency “very successful” – a rather surprising statement as Jameel was impeached during the time after a motion of no confidence was passed against him by the Maldivian Parliament who claimed Jameel had failed to fulfill his duties.

Yameen is currently serving his 5 year money laundering sentence, handed to him at the end of 2019 at Maafushi Prison. He has successfully appealed this sentence at the High court this year, with hearings at the verdict stage.

However, he is facing additional charges that are that of accepting bribery and money laundering, regarding a coverup for a USD 1,117,000 bribe taken via a mediator named Krik Riza in leasing of R. Fuhgiri to be developed as a tourist resort.
