Number of PPM members on the rise while MDP membership falls

Male’, Maldives – The members list of political parties registered with the Elections Commission of Maldives (EC) has revealed Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been losing members over past year, while Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has gained more members.

According to the numbers, 638 members have left the party within the past one year, decreasing the total number of members to 52,952. Mean while, during the same period of time, 343 new members have joined PPM, raising the new membership numbers to 37,144.

However, the biggest increase in membership has been for Jumhooree Party (JP), which is in coalition with the ruling party, MDP. The party has gained 3,667 new members during the past year. In addition, Adhaalath Party has also increased its membership from 6,436 to 6,640.

However, along with MDP, opposition party PNC has seen a decrease in numbers, which went down from 4,455 to 4,004. Labour Party and MTD have also lost members during the past year.
