Addu City, Maldives – Famous national team football turned sports fishing enthusiast, Shamweel Gasim, or better known as Bonda has no connection to drugs, says his lawyer, Ibrahim Shameel.
Shameel said this in a series out tweets he sent out following Bonda’s arrest on Saturday during a drug bust carried out in the city by Maldives Police Service. In his tweets, Shameel denied Bonda’s involvement in drugs saying that the headlines which came out on some of the local news outlets claiming Bonda was “arrested with large amounts of drugs” has no truth to it and that Shameel was arrested in Hithadhoo.
Shameel also explained that no drugs have been found on Bonda or any place related to him. He also reassured the public on behalf of Bonda that there has not been and will not be any connection of drugs to Bonda. Shameel also called upon the media to be responsible in journalism and spreading news, on behalf of Bonda.
While police have not yet officially commented on how and why Bonda was arrested, Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed sent out a series of tweets confirmed that a drug raid in fact, took place in the city.
CP Hameed said that approximately 80kgs of drugs were seized during this operation and that it was carried out solely based on locally developed intelligence and policing work. It was also detailed that the operation included the Drug Enforcement Department, Divisional Intelligence Department, Marine Police, as well as the South Police Division.

Earlier today, news also broke out about drugs worth more than USD 1 billion having have been seized by the Pakistani Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) in the Maldivian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which is the coastal and marine region under the Maldivian jurisdiction. However, Maldivian authorities have not commented on this matter as well. Read more on this news here.
As of recent time Maldives Police Service has been carrying out many operations in which alcohol and drugs have been seized all across the country, with the most recent being the one carried out in Addu City. Other than that, a man was arrested in Kulhuduffushi and several raids were carried out in various parts of Male’ as well.
