Male’, Maldives – Maldives Police Service has revealed that more four individuals have been arrested from three different atolls of the country, all for possession of drugs.
The four were arrested by the efforts of Police officers based within the atolls, which include Gn. Fuvahmulah City, located in the Southern part of Maldives, Thaa Atoll, located in the central South area and Baa Atoll, which is in the central region of the country, just above Kaafu atoll.
Going into detail, Maldives Police Service revealed that the intelligence department received information of drugs being smuggled into Fuvahmulah City, via a boat traveling to the city from Male’, upon which an arrest operation was carried out in which a 35 and 36 year old were arrested.
The pair were arrested while walking away from the boat with a box that came in it. Upon confiscating the box and searching the contents with in it, 211 cellophane bags containing drugs were discovered.
In addition to this, the arrest made in Thaa Atoll was in the island of Hirilandhoo, where a 25 year old local man was arrested based on information received that the individual was in possession of and was dealing drugs. Upon searching his residence, 12 pieces of paper containing the drugs as well as a rubber packet was discovered.
Another 43 year old male was also arrested from the island in a separate operation, also for possession of drugs. He was arrested after police discovered that a piece of paper he dropped on the ground when Police tried to search him, turned out be drugs.
Both men were summoned to Thaa. Veymandoo Magistrate Court, where they were both ordered to be held in remand for a period of 5 days.
In addition to this, a drug seize operation was also carried out in B. Dharavandhoo, in collaboration with B. Dharavandhoo Police Desk, B. Kendhoo Police Desk, and the Intelligence Department of Maldives Police Service. In this operation, upon searching the area behind a petrol shed in B. Dharavandhoo, two small rubber packets and one big rubber packet containing drugs were discovered. However no one has been reported to have been arrested with regards to the case.
While all cases are under further investigation, Police did not reveal the total quantity of drugs collected during the operation.
Maldives Police Service has notably been proactively conducting big drug raid operations, which has seen many arrested and hundreds of kilos of drugs confiscated over the past few months.
