Parliament Committee votes to dismiss Judge Bari

Male’, Maldives – The Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee votes to depose Abdul Bari Yoosuf from his position as the Chief Judge of Criminal Court after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) sent a proposal to the Parliament to dismiss him.

The decision to depose Bari from his position was taken by the members who attended Sunday’s committee meeting.

On November 18, the JSC sent a proposal to the Parliament to dismiss Bari from his position. The statement revealed by JSC showed that they have investigated that the accusation over Bari for being among the judges who received personal gain from the funds that were embezzled through Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

JSC further revealed that they have also investigated the issue regarding the profit not being disclosed from May, 2014 till February, 2018, when Bari was involved in a private business during the time period.

The statement from JSC further revealed that when Bari wanted a flat, an agreement was made to let him have a flat under his wife’s name, during the same days, Bari also received MVR 500,000 from Ahmed Adheeb, who was the the Vice President of Maldives back then.

JSC also mentioned that Bari paid MVR 600,000 in cash in advance to buy the registered flat, the investigation done by JSC commission further revealed that Bari received this money illegally.

The proposal sent by JSC was sent to the parliament after Bari received approximately one year of suspension from his job. Bari was suspended on December 12 of 2019 after Maldives Police Service revealed that they will be investigating the accusations over Bari.
