National expenses on Covid-19 tops MVR 2.7 billion

Male’, Maldives – The government of Maldives has revealed that the national expense towards Covid-19 in the country has exceeded MVR 2.7 billion.

According to the weekly statistics released by the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, 1.3 billion was spend on the health sector, relating to Covid-19 purposes up to the 19th of November. Out of this, the biggest expenditure was made by the National Disaster Management Authority, which spend MVR 871.8 million, while the Ministry of Health came in second, with a total expense of MVR 210.3 million. An additional MVR 84.06 million was spent by the Disaster Management fund, while MVR 29 million was spent from the Tourism Activities Implementation Fund.

The report further revealed that the biggest expense was made towards acquiring supplies, and requisitions for service provision, adding up to MVR 527.9 million.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the country has undergone major economic changes in recent months, with the country expected to go into massive debt in the upcoming year.
