Male’, Maldives – The opposition, Progressive Congress Coalition has said that their main priority for the year 2021 is to free Former President and Leader of the Opposition Abdullah Yaameen Abdul Gayyoom from jail and win the local council elections.
In a statement released by the opposition conveying greetings of the new year, they stated that 2020 was a year in which many efforts were made to free Former President Yaameen from jail after he was ruthlessly convicted to jail by the current administration. The statement highlighted some of the work done including further developing their political activities, increasing members to the coalition and they also noted the additional support and coordination received from the public.
Im addition to this, the statement noted that steering committees of the coalition had been put together and positioned in different areas of Maldives and being able to carry out the political activities of the coalition in a more orderly manner is a huge achievement for the party.
By god’s grace, our highest priority this 2021 would be to free Former President Yaameen from jail and win the local council elections. Our aim is to bring the political activities of the coalition to new levels in order to achieve that.

Im addition to this, it was further stated by the opposition that while 2020 proved to be a year of sadness and trouble for the whole world due to the pandemic, Maldives has also been faced with great losses including that of the economy. They added that the pandemic was even more troublesome for the Maldivian citizens due to the incapable administration and their corrupt system as they were using up the state’s funds for corrupt activities while the citizens were in lockdown.
Furthermore, the statement from the opposition called out the Government to fulfill their promises to the citizens and make genuine efforts to provide them with a better lifestyle. In addition to this they said that the government needs to reform their current system and heed to the complaints from the citizens as well as try to resolve them.
