Male’, Maldives – Former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has said that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), does not know how to govern.

In an interview yesterday to local news outlet “AdduLive“, Umar said that MDP does not have members capable of running the government, stating that the last time they tried to do so, it failed.

“Even no we can see that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government is failing” Umar said, claiming that President Solih does not know how to run the country. “MDP has not been able to fulfill even half of President Solih’s vows, other than MDP, there’s PPM, they didn’t do a very good job of governing either, citizens aren’t going to vote for them again”

Umar noted that the Maldivian economy is not managed very well, and Indian influence on the country has greatly increased, with excessive assistance from India negatively affecting Maldivian business.

” If we look at the past, the economy was run by Maldivians. People like, Champa, Qasim Ibrahim and the Kolige family developed as there were opportunities for Maldivians. However, currently, there is foreign influence everywhere, the head of pension office is a foreigner, Bank of Maldives head is a foreigner, likewise, numerous foreigners are being borught into Maldivian companies. This is sad, this a great loss to Maldivians” said Umar in his interview.

Speaking more about Indian influence, Umar said that there is a fear of enslavement, largely due to the government lacking the ability to run the country. He added that while India is a very friendly country that has assisted Maldives numerous times, it does not mean that Maldives should sign multiple deals with India, with some having unclear conditions, in addition to bringing in the Indian Military to the country.

The President has recently called “India Out”, a campaign by the Opposition Coalition, an “irresponsible political act”.
