Malé, Maldives— Health Protection Agency (HPA) has just confirmed that today at 11:07, an 60-year-old Maldivian woman admitted at Dharumavantha Hospital’s DH11 facility has passed away from the Covid-19 virus.

109 positive cases were recorded yesterday. Maldives now has a total 2,039 active cases, summing up the confirmed positive cases to date to a total of 16,656. 207 are hospitalized and health experts have warned of the possibility of healthcare facilities being overwhelmed.

This is the 55th Covid-19 death in the Maldives spacing over a period of nearly one year. As of late, 47 Maldivian nationals, 6 Bangladeshi nationals and a Filipino national have passed away from the virus in Maldives.

Along with the surge in the number of daily confirmed Covid-19 cases, HEOC revealed that the new Covid-19 variant has also been found in the country.

Experts say that the new variant is the cause for the sudden escalation of cases in the Malé city and the same variant has been confirmed in the atolls as well. With this, the HEOC has imposed several restrictions in the country to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus and the new variant.
