Addu City, Maldives – Addu City Council has decided to assign the responsibilities of the council’s Secretary General to the current Director of Development Service Division, Mohamed Yasrif. This decision was announced after a meeting held today.

Yasrif is the former Deputy Mayor and councilor for Addu City, Hithadhoo South constituency, and subsequently resigned from both positions in February 2021 to take on the Civil Service job of Director of Development Service Division.

The Maldivian Civil Civil Service Act (4/53) state that employees of the Maldivian Civil Service shall not participate in any political activity. Civil Service positions can only be taken after resigning from an individual’s current position if that person is holding a public office post.

Mohamed Yasrif was first elected to Addu City Council in 2015 and reelected in 2017. Following his win in 2017, he was elected by council members as the deputy mayor of Addu City. While Yasrif ran to extend his term in office in the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) primary elections, he was not elected to represent MDP for the upcoming local elections.
