Local Council Elections: EC extends voting time for some polling stations

Maldives – Elections Commission of Maldives (EC) has extended the voting time for some of the polling stations for today’s Local Council Election (LCE) and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) election.

According to EC, the extension had been made for polling stations which had faced delays in stating to vote due to various reasons. EC had extended the polling time for these stations for 18:15, 18:30, 18:45 and 21:50.

Local Council Election (LCE) and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) election started at 07:00 and was to be carried out until 18:00. While normal voting hours are set to be from 07:00 till 17:00, covid patients, people in quarantine and people in isolation are to vote after from 17:00 till 18:00.

Elections Commission had earlier revealed that 65.27% of the eligible voters have cast their vote until now. 

According to the statistics released by President of Elections Commission, Ahmed Shareef (EC Shareef), 178,280 voters out of 273,182 eligible voters had cast their vote until now. This figure comes with 88,146 female voters and 90,134 male voters who had cast their votes.

EC has also revealed that while 523 ballot boxes are closed, 53 of them have been started to be counted until now. 

According to the latest statistics revealed by the Local Council Elections, while there are a total of 713 polling stations present in the atolls and in the Capital Male’ area of Maldives for Local Council Elections and Women’s Development Committee.

Elections Commission had previously stated that a total of 273,182 eligible voters will be there for todays vote and out of that 5,134 are those who turned 18 within the year by which the election was postponed.
