Thaa Atoll, Maldives —A candidate of the ruling MDP Party has filed a complaint to the Elections Commission stating that two citizens from another constituency had voted for the candidates of Th. Gaadhiffushi who had participated in the local council elections that was held on last Friday.

The spokesperson of the MDP candidate who competed for the Gaadiffushi council spoke to local media outlet ‘Mihaaru’ and stated that they have found out that two additional people from another constituency has voted for the candidates of Th. Gaadhiffushi in the local council elections that was held on last Saturday as there were two ballots remaining after the voting ended.

According to the spokesperson, the two people who voted to the Th. Gaadhiffushi ballot box are from R. Innamaadhoo and L. Kunahandhoo.

After the voting was done, the remaining two ballots were of these two people. However, these two people had also voted. So we believe that they had voted for Gaadhiffushi candidates.

Spokesperson stated.

Although the officials had reported this matter to the Elections Commission on the day of the elections, the Spokesperson mentioned that they told to resume with the vote counting and to later present the issue as a complaint to the commission.

While there are accusations that two citizens from another constituency has voted for the candidates of Th. Gaadhiffushi, a PPM candidate was elected for one of the two chairs of the Women’s Development Committee with a two vote difference.

An unofficial summary of the results from the local council elections that was held on previous Friday shows that although MDP has once again gained majority of the chairs throughout the country, this time they have lost the support of a vast amount of people, losing chairs from several constituencies to the Opposition parties.
