New Malé City Council members’ inauguration to be held in Sultan Park

Malé, Maldives – The Inauguration ceremony of the newly elected Malé City Council President and councillors, and the signing ceremony of the new Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Malé members is to be held at Sultan Park.

The City Council stated that the ceremony would be held tomorrow morning at 0900 hours. City Council also said that due to the rapid spread of Covid-19 in Malé, for safety, locals cannot participate in the ceremony. The ceremony is to be broadcasted live on TVM and City Council’s Facebook page.

The newly elected Malé City Mayor Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s Mayoral Candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who beat the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Mayoral Candidate Anas Abduh Satthaar, with 61% of total votes.

PPM has for the first time, this time, won the majority of the Malé City Council. While PPM has 11 positions, MDP has only 5. This is also the first time that Malé City Council Mayor was elected from a party other than MDP.

Apart from Malé, all the other islands’ councillors are to be inaugurated tomorrow. This ceremony will be held online.

3,841 candidates had participated in the Local Council and WDC elections. 2,234 participated in Local Council elections whilst the other 1,580 candidates participated in the WDC election.
