MayTerrorAttack: President Solih appoints British Special Envoy for investigation

Special Envoy Abbaz Faiz appointed by President Solih.

Malé, Maldives — President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed a British Special Envoy, Abbaz Faiz to moniter the investigation, prosecution and trial of the terrorist attack that took place on May 6th against the Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Special Envoy, Abbaz Faiz is required to make sure that all stages of the investigation prosecution and trial of the alleged perpetrators, and any related and necessary inquiries are according to the international best practice and national laws. This is to ensure that the integrity of this investigation.

With 30 years of experience in monitoring the human rights situation in South Asia, including the Maldives, Abbaz Faiz is a British national who was previously employed at Amnesty International as the most senior advisor to the Secretary-General on the countries in his brief.

Over the past three years, Abbaz Faiz has also worked as a Lecturer in Law in the Schools of Law, Essex University in the United Kingdom. He has also published articles on human rights in the Guardian, New Statesman, the Lancet and in several South Asian newspapers. This includes of several papers he wrote about the human rights situation in the Maldives as well.

The President’s Office has informed that until the investigation is done, Abbaz Faiz will be stationed at the President’s Office and that the Office will provide all the support and administrative assistance needed by the Special Envoy.
