Important progress made in the May Terror Attack investigation: Police

Male’ Maldives — Maldives Police reveals that they have made important progresses in the IED attack investigation against the extremists who attacked Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on May 6th, 2021.

Speaking at the press conference held by Police regarding the investigation, Superintendent of Police, Hassan Shifau stated that they have so far received information from over 150 people in different ways throughout the course of the investigation.

Police have also searched over 25 places under the operation they have conducted against terrorism, instigated by the attack on Speaker Nasheed. While the Police have so far arrested 14 individuals, four of them are related to the attack against Speaker Nasheed and the remaining 10 people were arrested for suspect extremist activities.

In addition to this, Shifau revealed that they have watched and are analyzing over 200 footages related to the investigation, making important progress in the investigation. Police have also gathered important forensic proofs from the IED explosion.

Shifau stated that the Police are also carrying out the investigation on a financial angle to find out who funded the attack against Speaker Nasheed and that they are getting help from relevant authorities and experts from America.

The IED explosion went off around 20:20 on 6 May leaving Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed critically injured while he was getting in to his car near his house, G. Kenereege, Malé City. In addition to him, 3 more people were also been reported to be injured from the explosion including the Speaker’s bodyguards and bystanders.

Nasheed was taken in with heavy bleeding, and both internal and external shrapnel injuries. Ball bearings were found in Nasheed’s chest, near the heart. Injuries caused by these projectiles caused life threatening damage to the chest area. Nasheed endured major injury to the fourth rib, with a blade going through a lung. A projectile also went through his intestine with another near his liver. 

Speaker Nasheed was treated at the Critical Care Unit of ADK hospital in Malé initially and was airlifted to Germany yesterday for recovery and rehabilitation. Parliament had revealed that Speaker Nasheed’s medical expenses in Germany is being covered by Honorary Consul of Maldives in Germany, Christian Von Stetten.
