Malé, Maldives – The national airline of India, Air India has decided to arrange specials flights from Malé to Trichy specialised for Tamil Nadu citizens in Maldives who want to go back to India.
The flight is arranged to depart on 25 June 2021, a day after the Maldives academic year end. The flight will arrive carrying cargo to Maldives and will fly back with passengers.
Indian media report that there are about 10,000 Tamil Nadu citizens currently in Maldives, working as teachers and various other jobs, who have not been able to go back to India for the holidays. They stated that although there are flights to India, there are no direct flights to the Indian state Tamil Nadu.
Air India conducted a survey on Facebook before coming to a decision on arranging the flight, from which they received over 200 responses from expats stating that they want to return back to their country immediately.
Maldives has banned entry from South Asian countries with the escalation of Covid-19 cases in the country.
