Malé, Maldives – Malé City Council has decided to implement a vehicle ban in Malé between 16:00 to 20:00 on Al’ha Eid.

Speaking at a news conference, Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the council has decided for only walking to be allowed in the capital city between 16:00 and 20:00 on Al’ha Eid. He said that the council has carried out necessary discussions with traffic police as well.

Mayor Muizzu said that the purpose of the vehicle ban is to give an opportunity for the locals and families to go out and enjoy on Eid without the difficulties and fear of vehicles and traffic. Muizzu noted that the cases in Malé have finally decreased after a prolonged lockdown, which forced citizens to stay at home.

The council previously opened a poll to the public, from which the council received feedback from locals stating that they want some time to go out with their families on Eid. The council came to the decision for a vehicle ban based on this feedback.

Mayor noted that although driving vehicles will be banned in Malé, Villimalé and Hulhumalé between the aforementioned times, emergency vehicles are exempted from the rule. The Mayor advised locals to obey and follow HPA guidelines when outside in order to prevent another surge in cases.
