Govt. preparing to turn Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital into tertiary institution

Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih states that the government will continue to expand the medical services offered at the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital (KRH) until the proposed tertiary level hospital in Kulhudhuffushi is completely established.

President Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed began a 03-island trip to the north of the country this Friday. The first couple’s scheduled to make official visits to the Kulhuduffushi City, Kumundhoo Island and then Hanimaadhoo Island of Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Currently, they are at the Kulhuduffushi City.

Last Friday Afternoon, President Solih and First Lady Fazna visited KRH, where President Solih held a meeting with KRH management to discuss about the difficulties faced by the hospital and  latest details of the efforts underway to develop the hospital. 

At the meeting, the senior management of the hospital conveyed the gratitude of Haa Dhaalu Atoll citizens towards the government’s focus and efforts on developing KRH to President Solih. The management also mentioned the difficulties they face in providing medical services and even raised their concerns in effectively managing the facility.

President Solih was also briefed on the latest advancements made by the hospital in upgrading patient care, introducing new specialised healthcare and medical services to the region. 

Noting that Kulhudhuffushi is a central hub that is vital to service delivery in the region, President Solih reiterated the government’s vision to develop tertiary level hospitals in five regions of the country to improve nationwide healthcare. President Solih stated that this would reduce public’s reliance on centralized healthcare services in the Malé region.

In addition to this, President Solih shared details of the efforts underway to develop the hospital. He stated that the government will continue to expand services offered at the KRH, even before the newly proposed tertiary level hospital in Kulhudhuffushi island is established. Recently, the KRH hospital introduced MRI and CT scan services as well as speech therapy sessions, mammography services and multiple other healthcare services as well.

According to the President’s Office, the KRH expansion project consists of establishing a 30-bed ward, with 6 ICU beds and a walkway. Another simultaneous expansion project prompts the addition of 23 consultation rooms to the existing ER facility in the hospital. Apart from this, President’s Office reveals that the project to build a new tertiary hospital in Kulhudhuffushi island will be released for tender soon.

During his 03-island trip, President Solih is being accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials as well.
