PGO raises 13 charges against 4 suspects involved in MayTerrorAttack

Malé, Maldives – The Prosecutor General’s Office on Tuesday, informs that they have raised a total of 12 charges against 4 suspects involved in the terror attack against Former President and Current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.

Speaking at the press conference of Prosecutor General’s Office, PG Shameem said that the charges have been raised against 4 suspects physically involved in the terror attack against Speaker Nasheed. This includes Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed 25, Ali Mujaaz Ahmed 21, Ali Thahumeen Ahmed 32 in addition to Ali Haisham.

4 charges have been raised against Adhuham, who is accused of using the remote to activate the explosive when Speaker Nasheed was close by. The charges include getting involved in an act of terrorism, planning an act of terrorism, supporting a terror association and that of attempted assassination using a dangerous weapon.

The two charges raised against Mujaaz who is accused of helping Adhuham to flee after the attack, includes planning an act of terrorism and that of aiding a criminal to flee.

Along with this, 4 charges have been raised against Thahumeen involved in the attack as well. They include being involved in an act of terrorism, planning an act of terrorism, supporting a terrorist association and helping to transport explosives.

Furthermore, the charges raised against Ali Haisham who is responsible for attaching the IED to the cycle include being involved in an act of terrorism, transporting explosives and planning an act of terrorism.

PG Shameem said that they have sufficient evidence to prove the charges against the suspects.

The IED explosion went off around 2020hrs on May 6, leaving Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed critically injured while he was getting into a car near his residence Kenereege in Galolhu Malé City. In addition to the Speaker, three more people were injured from the explosion including the Speaker’s bodyguards and bystanders.

Nasheed was taken to ADK with heavy bleeding and both internal and external shrapnel injuries. Ball bearings were found in Nasheed’s chest, near the heart. Injuries caused by these projectiles caused life threatening damage to the chest area. Nasheed endured major injury to the fourth rib, with a blade going through a lung. A projectile also went through his intestine with another near his liver.

Speaker Nasheed was treated at the Critical Care Unit of ADK hospital in Malé until he was airlifted to Germany on May 13, 2021, for recovery and rehabilitation. Parliament had previously revealed that Speaker Nasheed’s medical expenses in Germany are being covered by Honorary Consul of Maldives in Germany, Christian Von Stetten.
