Addu City, Maldives – An elderly man in Hithadhoo Masjidul Ikram mosque has been attacked.
While the elderly man sleeps at the mosque as he has no guardian or shelter, local media outlets inform the he was attacked and given death threats last night.
Police has refrained from giving details regarding the matter.
The attack comes months after the Addu City Council made an announcement, requesting to find two guardians for an elderly man above the age of 65 and a shelter for him as well.
There has been an increase in crimes in mosques in Malé recently with squatting and arrests made.
Additionally, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said in February 2021 that the government plans to begin work on the new Elderly Village in Addu City this year.
