Malé, Maldives – Vice President of Adhaalath Party has recommended fixing the errors in Quran texts in various textbooks taught across Maldives without politicizing the mistakes.

Dr Iyaz has said this while the Education Minister Dr Aishath Ali admitted that schools in Maldives have been teaching using textbooks with incorrectly printed Quran for the past five years. To this, Dr Iyaz said that making such excuses are similar to actions of a mushrik (translation: polytheist, rejector of Islamic tawhiq).

Correct the mistakes [in Quran texts in school books] without politicizing them.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Education Ministry, Dr Aishath Ali stated that the Quran was written incorrectly in the Grade 1 textbooks that were being published since 2015 and that the issue has only come into the light now.

Over the past week, social media has been on fire after an individual pointed out that the holy Quran was written wrongly in two Surah of Grade 1 student’s books. Along with this, several mistakes were also pointed out from the Islam books of Grade 2 and Grade 12 as well.

Minister Aishath stated that the books themselves were published after a green light was given from the National Institute of Education (NIE), Islamic Ministry and the Islamic University as well. However, as the issue has come to light that the Quran was written incorrectly, she stated that the Education Ministry has begun work to correct the mistake.

The mistakes have caused much contention among the general public with many politicizing the issue while some point fingers at religious figures of Maldives.
